SUPER Eagles interim head coach Austin Eguavoen has submitted a technical report of the team’s performance at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations to the Nigeria Football Federation.
The three-time African champions were knocked out of the tournament in the first knockout round by Tunisia after breezing through the group stage with three wins ouf of three.
The NFF confirmed in a press release on Tuesday that it received the in-depth technical report breaking down the disappointing outing.
“We have received the technical report on the AFCON 2021 and we are presently studying it, in conjunction with the Ministry of Youth and Sports Development. Once the study and appraisal are done with, we will make known our position,” NFF General Secretary, Dr Mohammed Sanusi, said.
The Super Eagles will take on Ghana’s Black Stars in the Qatar 2022 World Cup play-off round scheduled for March.
Eguavoen is the Technical Director of the NFF but was appointed to lead the Super Eagles to the AFCON in Cameroon in December, barely a month before the kick-off of the tournament.
He replaced Gernot Rohr, who had been sacked weeks earlier following the Super Eagles’ inconsistent performances in the World Cup qualifiers, although they scraped through to the playoffs.
Eguavoen, who led the Eagles to the semi-finals of the 2006 AFCON in Egypt, supervised a brilliant group stage in Cameroon, with the Nigerian side defeating Egypt, Sudan and Guinea-Bissau.
But they were surprisingly flat against Tunisia in the round of 16, losing 1-0 and having Alex Iwobi sent off in the second half.
There are strong indications that Eguavoen could be retained for the playoffs even after the NFF had announced the appointment of Jose Peseiro as substantive Super Eagles head coach on the eve of the AFCON.
