HOPES of a money-spinning big fight between Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury may have been dashed after the latter declared that he had only one bout left before his retirement from boxing.
World champion Fury and former world champion of Nigerian heritage Joshua were billed for a £200m megafight in 2021 that did not materialise because of previous commitments.
Instead, Fury fought Deontay Wilder for a third time and won to retain his World Boxing Council heavyweight title, while Joshua lost his World Boxing Association, World Boxing Organisation and International Boxing Federation belts to Oleksandr Usyk.
Now Fury, 33, is scheduled to defend his belt against fellow Briton Dillian Whyte in April, and the champion sensationally declared on Tuesday that would be his final fight.
Fury says he will hang up his gloves to spend time with his wife Paris and six kids.
“This is the final fight of my career, I’m retiring after this,” he said at a pre-fight press conference in London.
“$150million in the bank, healthy, young, I’m gonna buy a massive yacht abroad. I’m retiring, I’m out, this is my final fight, I’m done.”
Fury had earlier taken aim at Whyte for refusing to attend the opening press conference ahead of their world heavyweight title showdown – before enjoying an imaginary face-off with his British rival.
