THE CPDD has expressed concern over the rising tensions and possibility of clashes between Republican and Democratic supporters.
This is following the protests in multiple cities across the US over the past two nights.
The CPDD added that the protests, which have been mostly peaceful, may erupt into violent incidents if not quelled.
This concern was contained in a statement titled, “CPDD Calls for Calm amid Growing Street Protests”
According to the statement, “The violence last night in Portland and Denver highlights the growing rifts in our communities, particularly between community members and law enforcement and across the partisan divide. International observers raised concerns over increasing polarization and baseless allegations of fraud as well. Peaceful protesters and counter protesters again clashed, amid reports of physical attacks and property damage.”
The statement noted that “some of these protests are egged on by President Trumps premature declaration of victory”
CPDD said the events of the last two nights had caused something never experienced before to happen in certain parts of America.
” Portland saw the deployment of the National Guard for the first time last night, where tensions have increased since the deployment of US Marshalls in the summer and the deputization of local police officers by the US Marshalls. If these and other trends continue, CPDD is concerned that violence will escalate.”
CPDD called for calm among parties’ supporters and proffered solutions that could nip the escalation of protests in the bud.
“Therefore, we again call on leaders of both parties to urge calm among their supporters, to promote community healing, and to improve dialogue and trust between communities and law enforcement and across the political divide.
We also urge organisers to take extra precautions to ensure that any public events or protests are conducted peacefully.
“Since risk of violent escalation seems to increase at night, the timing of any large public mobilizations during the day could help reduce some of the risk.
We also ask media and social media reporters to use extra caution in reporting election-related incidents and avoid inflammatory statements,” the statement added.
