VICE-President Yemi Osinbajo was not involved in any road accident in Abuja today, his spokesperson, Laolu Akande, has said.
Akande was reacting in a tweet to some media reports about a purported road accident involving Mr Osinbajo in Abuja.
He clarified in a tweet that the Vice President’s convoy met a road accident and ensured victims were taken to the hospital in his convoy before heading to the airport.
“On his way to the airport this morning, VP came across a road traffic accident, stopped to lend assistance, and ensured (the) victim was taken to the hospital with VP’s convoy ambulance. He then proceeded on his trip and is now in Ondo State heading to (the) site of yesterday’s attack in Owo,” he tweeted.
Akande said the Vice President was on his way to the airport to fly to Owo in Ondo State to deliver the presidency’s condolences to the victims of Sunday’s mass killing of worshippers at a Catholic Church in the ancient town.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) also debunked the reports.
Corps Public Education Officer, Bisi Kazeem, disclosed this in Abuja.
According to him, the VP helped to rescue an accident victim along the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport Road, Abuja.
“One male was injured, but no one died. The victim has been taken to the Air Force Base Hospital, Airport Road, Abuja, for treatment by the vice-president convoy ambulance, as it happened in his presence,” Kazeem said.
He stated that the VP and his security aides were joined by other Nigerians to pull the victim out of the scene of the accident.
He added the vice-president directed that the victim be treated on his account.
Kazeem added that the FRSC Corps Marshal, Dr Boboye Oyeyemi, commended the vice president for rescuing the victim, saying that it was a call to all that road safety was everybody’s business.
Attributing the accident to over speeding by the driver of the affected vehicle and why the lone victim was injured, the Corps Public Education Officer, warned against speeding, urging road users to be calm and patient while driving.
He said: “The VP heads out to Owo, (Ondo State this morning) where worshippers were heinously attacked yesterday resulting in many casualties. He will deliver (the) president’s condolences and message in person”.
The gunmen were said to have stormed the church and shot at worshippers indiscriminately. The number of casualties is yet to be ascertained.
