SUPER Eagles defender Calvin Bassey has been mentioned as a possible target for Wolverhampton Wanderers after a post he made on social media.
The Rangers star shared a picture on his Instagram story with the Wolves’ training ground as his location yesterday, just before the Super Eagles faced Sao Tome and Principe in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Agadir, Morocco.
The post appeared to be a promotional one for a chauffeur service and it was quickly deleted.
When Bassey was named in the starting line-up for the match in Morocco, it became obvious he could not have been in Wolverhampton when the post was made.
He went on to play the match, which the Super Eagles won 10-0, their biggest victory ever.
Still, the situation has sparked speculation about the powerful defender moving to Premier League club Wolves from the UEFA Europa League finalists and Scottish Cup holders.
Bassey, 22, has caught the interest of clubs from across Europe after the excellent season he had with Rangers, both in the Scottish Premiership and the Europa League.
The towering defender, who is equally competent at left-back and centre-back, played 50 games for Rangers in all competitions last season, excelling in most.
According to reports in Scotland, Rangers would like to hold on to Bassey for at least another season, but they would be willing to listen to offers of around £25 million for the player they got for free from Leicester City U-23s in 2020.
Bassey has also been linked with Aston Villa in a reunion with Steven Gerrard, who brought him to Ibrox in 2020.
The Nigeria international’s current contract at Rangers expires in 2024.
