Veteran actress, Sola Onayiga, passes on

FUJI House of Commotion star, Sola Onayiga, has been confirmed dead.

The veteran actress, full name, Oluwasolamipe Onayiga (nee Awojobi), who played the role of Ireti in the popular soap ‘Fuji House of Commotion’ – creted by the late Amaka Igwe — was said to have died at 3.45am at a hospital; a few hours after her younger colleague, Ada Ameh, was also reported dead.

The death of the actress, who was popularly known for her comic role in the now-rested TV soap, was confirmed by her dotting husband, Tosin Onayiga, who, in recetn days had been involved in frantic efforts to raise assistance for her urgent medical needs.

Mrs Onayiga, a native of Ikorodu Lagos, an accomplished stage and screen actress, was a Fellow of Theatre Arts conferred on her by her professional group, the National Association of Nigerian Theatre Arts Practitioners, NANTAP, which has also confirmed her passing. She was best known for living delightfully the role of Ireti aka ‘Cooking Practicals’ in the defunct television sitcom that also starred the popular actor, Kunle Bamtefa.

Her family members are yet to release an official statement on the details surrounding her death.

According to The Guardian, “In 2015, the Social Democratic Party (SDP) chose the late Onayiga to represent Ikorodu Constituency 1 in the Lagos State House of Assembly.

After completing her secondary education, the actress began working for the Federal Capital Development Authority, or FCDA.

In a 2016 interview, she said, “I was employed as an interviewer; that is, I interviewed those who went around the country to sample opinions about the suitability of Abuja as the Federal Capital Territory. This was around 1976 and 1977. I was posted to Dodan Barracks to interview the soldiers.”

She spent two years as a student at the National Institute of Internal Auditors before leaving to pursue Theatre studies at the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University, OAU).

She began her acting career as a novice. She performed in Fred Agbeyegbe’s The King Must Dance Naked as her first professional gig.

She received what she described as a professional fee for her performance as Queen Odosun, one of the main characters. Most people started referring to her as Queen Osun after the role.

In addition to Fuji House of Commotion, Sola also appeared in Checkmate (also by the late Amaka Igwe) and several Nollywood films.
