Tobi Amusan has secured an endorsement deal with Nigerian telecommunications company Globacom.

The superstar athlete was presented today by the company in Lagos as a Glo Ambassador following her recent record-breaking exploits.

Amusan, 25, became the first Nigerian in history to set a world record in athletics and win a gold medal at the World Athletics Championships in Oregon, United States of America in July.

She set a new women’s 100 metres hurdles world mark of 12.12 seconds in the semi-finals before going on to win the historic world title just three hours later.

Amusan also retained her Commonwealth title and set a new Games record in Birmingham in August, and wrapped up the successful season by winning the Diamond League trophy for the second year in a row.

Amusan, who is the first female athlete signed by the telecommunication company, joins boxing star Anthony Joshua as a Glo Ambassador, with footballers Mikel Obi and Osaze Odemwingie having also served in the role.

“As we all know, Globacom has a long history of rewarding excellence and empowering people,” she said at the presentation ceremony at the company’s head office in Lagos.

“I am happy to join a long list of stars like Anthony Joshua, Mikel Obi and Osaze Odewingie among others. As a global ambassador, I hope to mentor and inspire younger people to achieve their goals.

“I’m going to do my very best to be a good representative of the company and use that to inspire the next generation.

“I am grateful to the chairman, Dr. Mike Adenuga, for giving me this amazing opportunity. And thanks to everyone that has made it possible.”

Globacom’s Lagos Regional Manager, Lawrence Odediran, who spoke on behalf of the company, said Amusan represents the Nigerian spirit.

“At Globacom, we are very proud of what Tobi Amusan has achieved in her athletics career,” he noted.

“She is an embodiment of the Nigerian spirit of resilience, hardwork and enterprise which enabled her to excel irrespective of the enormity of the challenges she encountered in her quest for success.

“As a Glo Ambassador, Tobi Amusan will represent the company and project the image of the brand across the world.”

Odediran added that the endorsement deal is long-term, although the terms were not disclosed.
