Morocco produced the shock of the Qatar 2022 World Cup round of 16 with a penalty shootout victory over Spain.

The North Africans won the shootout 3-0 after full-time and extra-time ended goalless.

Achraf Hakimi, who was born in Madrid, Spain, scored the winning penalty for Morocco after the 2010 world champions had missed all three of their kicks.

Abdelhamid Sabiri and Hakim Ziyech converted the other penalties for Morocco, while Badr Benoun missed.

Morocco goalkeeper Bono, who plays in Spain for Sevilla, was the hero for the Atlas Lions, saving two of the kicks as the other one came off the post.

Pablo Sarabia, Carlos Soler and Sergio Busquets all missed for Spain.

Morocco are the only African team left in the tournament and they fought bravely to take the game to penalties.

Spain dominated possession throughout the 120 minutes as Morocco soaked up the pressure, but the Lions had the best chances.

Substitute Walid Cheddira had one-on-one opportunities against goalkeeper Unai Simon to finish Spain off in the second half and extra-time, but he fluffed them.

The defeat follows Spain’s penalty shootout loss in the European Championships semi-finals to Italy last year, and they are now the team to have lost the most shootouts in World Cup history.

They are the first nation in World Cup history to lose four penalty shootouts, while they have become just the second side to not score in one after Switzerland against Ukraine in 2006, according to Opta statistics.

Morocco will face Switzerland or Portugal in the quarter-finals on Saturday.
