Manchester City cruised past Chelsea into the fourth round of the FA Cup with a routine 4-0 victory over a poor Chelsea side at the Etihad Stadium tonight.
It was City’s third consecutive win over Chelsea this season following wins in the Carabao Cup and Premier League.
Tonight’s match was nothing close to the normally tight encounters between the two sides, as City totally dominated their struggling visitors.
Riyad Mahrez scored twice, with Julian Alvarez and Phil Foden netting the other goals.
Algeria forward Mahrez sent City on their way with a superb free-kick in the 23rd minute and completed the scoring five minutes from time.
In between Mahrez’s goals Alvarez, who won the Qatar 2022 with Argentina in December, scored a 30th minute penalty and Foden finished off a fine move as City eased into a 3-0 first-half lead.
The draw for the fourth round was held just before kick-off, with City to play either Arsenal or Oxford, who meet tomorrow night.
In other fourth round pairings, Manchester United welcome Reading and Brighton will host the winners of the third round replay between Wolves and Liverpool.
In ties involving Super Eagles players, Kelechi Iheanacho and Wilfred Ndidi will travel to Walsall with Leicester City, while Joe Aribo’s Southampton are home to Blackpool.
