THE Super Falcons were beaten 1-0 by hosts Mexico in their opening match at the four-nation Revelation Cup tournament in Leon in the early hours of today.
The nine-time African champions have now lost six matches in a row, their worst-ever sequence of results.
Kiena Palacios scored the only goal of the match in the 85th minute as a poor Falcons side slumped to yet another defeat.
Under the guidance of American coach Randy Waldrum, the nine-time continental champions recorded their joint-worst performance at the 2022 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco last July, losing out to Morocco in the semi-finals and falling to Zambia in the third-place match.
The top African team in the FIFA women’s ranking also lost 2-0 to Japan in a friendly in Kobe after the continental tournament.
Waldrum insisted after the Japan defeat, his side’s fifth in a row, that he had done a decent job.
“I don’t put a lot of weight by what everybody outside says or the results of some games where we know half of those games we have not had our full team together,” the 66-year-old college coach told ESPN.
“We are coaching the players that we have and I am proud of their development and I think the fans will be proud of their performance at the World Cup.”
The Super Falcons have another opportunity to halt the historic losing streak on Saturday when they face Colombia.
