SUPER Falcons head coach Randy Waldrum has expressed his frustration with the team’s form, even after insisting there are signs of improvement.
The nine-time African champions have not won a match since beating Cameroon at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in July, when they finished a disappointing fourth, their worst outing in the competition’s history.
They have lost all seven games since, their longest run of consecutive defeats in history, as they get set for the FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand in July and August.
The continent’s top team in the FIFA rankings continued the dismal streak last night with a 1-0 loss to Colombia in the Revelation Cup, their second defeat after opening the four-nation competition with a 1-0 reverse to hosts Mexico.
Despite the worrying trend of results, Waldrum claimed he saw signs of improvement in last night’s display.
“What we have to take from this match is that everything is in preparation for the Women’s World Cup,” he said during his post-match press conference.
“I thought we were better today than we were against Mexico. I thought the team was a little bit more settled.”
The American collegiate coach then outlined the aspects of the performance that left him dissatisfied.
“I was a little disappointed in our final third in the attack. We were playing very much around the perimeter and we weren’t connecting,” Waldrum explained.
“I thought we’d have created more problems if more service came from those areas in the box because we’re so good in the air.
“I felt we were a little bit better organised in midfield today than we were against Mexico. We made an improvement from the first game but there’s so much work to be done.”
The Super Falcons will face Costa Rica on Tuesday in their final fixture of the Revelation Cup.
The Nigerian ladies are in Group B of the World Cup, where they will battle co-hosts Australia, Olympic champions Canada and newcomers Republic of Ireland.
