A VIDEO has shown where some officers of the Nigeria Police Force attached to the Lagos State Rapid Response Squad (RRS), harassed and threatened to jail Nigeria born international music star, Seun Oluyole, popularly known as Sean Dampte and four others on their way to a concert in Lagos.
Sean Dampte in company of four other artistes had a rough time in the hands of police officers in Oniru area of Victoria Island, Lagos, on Friday, April 14, but the intervention of a calmer officer saved the day.
Narrating thier ordeal to Naija Times, the UK-based musician said he and his colleagues were riding in a convoy of three cars and were on their way to the Landmark Beach at Oniru when they were stopped by the RRS officers.
He said, “Rather than ask for our identities, we were roughly exited from the vehicles and searched. With nothing found on us, the officers searched the vehicles and found an art knife in the car I was riding in. I bought the knife in Kenya during my Africa Tour ’23, in preparatory for my Live in London concert, scheduled for September this year.”
“When I asked the officer to explain why we were being stopped, the police officer became livid and threatened to put us in jail. When one of my team members wanted to make a call to someone, the angry officer went political, accusing Nigeria youths for blaming the police for complicity in the recently acclaimed unfair election in Lagos, and other parts of the country,” Sean Dampte added.
The visibly angry officer in the video was heard saying: “I go change am for you now now,” while a calmer officer appealed to the musicians to relax and be calm.
Continuing, the officer told the Sean Dampte that more powerful Nigerians than him are in jail and nothing would stop him from seeing them end up in jail, stressing that “no amount of begging, while inside the four walls, would set you free.”
“We were allowed to go our way, but the knife was seized even when receipt for it was shown to the officer,” he added.
The vdeo of the harassment and threat has since been generating a lot of buzz online.
