In-form Union Berlin striker Awoniyi ‘really happy’ after scoring again

Nigerian striker Taiwo Awoniyi continued his fine form on Saturday with a goal and an assist in Union Berlin’s 2-0 Bundesliga win over Werder Bremen. 

The 23-year-old, who is on loan at Union Berlin from Liverpool, took his goal contribution tally to five goals and two assists in 12 Bundesliga appearances with his output on Saturday. 

Awoniyi has now been involved in a Bundesliga every 126 minutes this season, and there are already calls for him to be included in the Super Eagles set-up. 

Saturday’s goal was seen as scrappy by some, but Awoniyi was just happy to get 2021 off to a productive start. 

“When I saw the ball, I noticed that if I took one more step the keeper might come out,” the 2013 FIFA U-17 World Cup winner with the Golden Eaglets told Bundesliga TV. 

“Then I just had to kick the ball with my toe and it went in. I was really happy about that because a goal is a goal, no matter how it goes into the net.”

 All of Awoniyi’s goal contributions have come in his last seven Bundesliga appearances, making him the most in-form Nigerian striker in Europe at the moment. 

Union Berlin are now fourth in the Bundesliga table with 24 points from 14 matches, an impressive position for the modest club.
