DUTCH football player Quincy Promes will be prosecuted for allegedly importing more than 1,300 kilos of cocaine with a street value of around €75 million.

The Public Prosecution Service confirmed the charges today, according to Dutch outlet NOS.

According to the Public Prosecution Service, the hard drug was smuggled in two batches of about 650 kilos and 713 kilos and was intercepted in the port of Antwerp, Belgium at the end of January 2020.

The National Drug Monitor estimated that the 130 kilos would have accounted for around €75m on the streets of The Netherlands capital Amsterdam.

Promes, who is a former Ajax forward and Netherlands international, was already suspected of involvement in drug trafficking and participation in organised crime before these latest charges. The pre-trial hearing is set for Monday.

The wide forward, 31, currently plays for the Russian club Spartak Moscow, where former Nigeria international Victor Moses also features.

According to NOS, if Promes does not return to The Netherlands, the case can be handled by the court without his presence, but with a lawyer authorised by him.

Promes is suspected of aggravated assault in another case, in which he allegedly stabbed his cousin in the knee at a family celebration.

He was previously charged with attempted manslaughter, but the case was not proven.

The court reopened the investigation in March, and the last part of the case will also be heard on Monday.
