DESPITE opposition voices in the past few days, the Senate has justified the planned purchase of luxury vehicles for senators.

The Chairman of the Senate Committee on Services, Sunday Karimi, told journalists today in Abuja that the leadership of the two chambers of the National Assembly agreed to buy luxury cars for lawmakers because of their durability and maintenance during a four-year period.

He went on to say that Nigerians targeted lawmakers while disregarding ministries.

Some ministers, he claims, have more than three Land Cruisers, Prados, and other vehicles, and no questions are asked.

This comes only days after it was revealed that members of the House of Representatives were due to get Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs) worth 160 million naira each.

Last Friday, the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project asked a Federal High Court in Lagos to prevent the politicians from receiving the SUVs until the hearing and determination of the organization’s applications for an injunction.

The group’s applications for interim and interlocutory injunctions came in response to claims that members of the House of Representatives are set to purchase and receive SUVs worth N57.6 billion. According to sources, each SUV will cost around N160 million.
