THE Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has tonight postponed the compilation of results in the November 11, 2023, Bayelsa State Governorship Election to Monday noon.

The results of six of the state’s eight local government areas, namely Kolokuma/Opokuma, Ogbia, Yenegoa, Sagbama, Nembe, and Ekeremor, have been compiled with Brass and Southern Ijaw being the   two remaining local government areas.

Prof Faruq Kuta, Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Minna, and the state Returning Officer for the Bayelsa election, called the poll off this night.

In Bayelsa, sixteen political parties fielded candidates for the election.

Timipre Sylva, a former Minister of State for Petroleum Resources and ex-governor of the state, is Governor Duoye Diri’s main opponent.

Sylva, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate in the election, served as governor of Bayelsa from May 2007 to April 2008, and then again from May 2008 until January 2012.

Imo and Kogi states, like Bayelsa, had governorship elections yesterday.

INEC has already proclaimed a winner in Imo, with Governor Hope Uzodimma of the APC defeating Samuel Anyanwu of the PDP, Nneji Achonu of the Labour Party (LP), and 15 other opponents.

Uzodimma received 540, 308 votes, defeating his nearest competitors, PDP’s Anyanwu, who received 71,503 votes, and LP’s Achonu, who received 64,081.
