WORKERS of the Distillers and Blenders Association of Nigeria (DIBAN), today, protested at the Lagos branch of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) in Isolo.
The protesters carried signs with messages such as ‘Let poor Nigerians breathe’, ‘Let beverage workers breathe’, and others.
This is one of the most recent of the rallies that began on February 1, 2024 when NAFDAC enforced the prohibition of alcoholic drinks in sachets, and glass bottles of 200ml or less.
The NAFDAC boss, Mojisola Adeyeye, stated that none of these beverages were registered with the NAFDAC.
On February 13, 2024, the Food, Beverage and Tobacco Senior Staff Association of Nigeria gave NAFDAC a two-week ultimatum to lift its ban on sachet alcohol.
The association, which is part of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), made the demand during a demonstration at the NAFDAC headquarters in Abuja.
Members of the association warned that they would escalate their protests across the Agency’s offices nationwide if no action is taken.
