Bassey, Iwobi score as Fulham stun Man United, Awoniyi grabs Forest assist

SUPER Eagles of Nigeria stars Calvin Bassey and Alex Iwobi scored both goals for Fulham today as they recorded their first English Premier League victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford in 21 years.

Fulham were much the better side against their more accomplished opponents, taking more shots and creating more opportunities, and they won the match 2-1.

Centre-back Bassey opened the scoring in the 65th minute with his first-ever goal for Fulham, firing into the roof of the net right-footed after his first shot from inside the United box was blocked.

Fulham should have been farther ahead at that point but it was United who scored the next goal through another centre-back.

Harry Maguire ventured forward and was rewarded in the 89th minute when Fulham goalkeeper Bernd Leno spilled Bruno Fernandes’ shot to him for a simple tap-in.

There was lengthy stoppage time of nine minutes due to time spent treating injured players on the pitch, and it looked as if United could go ahead to win their fifth straight Premier League match.

But it was Fulham who profited as substitute Adama Traore broke away and passed to Iwobi, who dummied past Victor Lindelof and Amad Traore before firing low into Andre Onana’s near post, with the goalkeeper rooted to the spot.

With the result, Fulham stay in 12th and moved to within three points of the top 10, while United fell eight points behind Aston Villa in the race for the UEFA Champions League places.

Villa survived a scare to defeat Nottingham Forest 4-2, with Douglas Luiz scoring twice as they took a 3-0 lead.

Moussa Niakhate in first-half stoppage time and Morgan Gibbs-White scoring three minutes into the second half.

Villa however made sure of the points and cemented their fourth position when Leon Bailey got their fourth goal in the 61st minute.

In other Premier League afternoon kick-offs, Brighton drew 1-1 at home to Everton, while Crystal Palace welcomed their new manager Oliver Glasner with a 3-0 win over 10-man Burnley, with Ghana forward Jordan Ayew among the scorers.
