AS a result of growing public outrage over alleged illegal activities involving Point-of-Sale (PoS) machine operators and certain police officers, the Nigeria Police Force has strengthened its ban on the use of PoS machines and other electronic mobile money transaction devices in police stations and other facilities nationwide.
According to the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the prohibition is intended to protect the integrity and security of police operations while also preventing corrupt practices and maintaining discipline within the Force.
According to the statement, despite prior directions, some Commands and Formations have persisted to violate the regulation, prompting a harsh warning from the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, of severe sanctions against the leadership of non-compliant units.
The IGP underlined the risks of employing electronic payment devices at police facilities, such as the potential compromise of sensitive information, financial irregularities, and the facilitation of illegal activity.
The IGP stated that any police officer or PoS operator discovered violating the ban or indulging in illegal money transactions will face appropriate disciplinary action.
The statement read partly: “The IGP urges all officers and personnel to comply with this directive without exception, and warns that any police officer or POS operator found contravening this order, or conniving to conduct illicit financial transactions will face appropriate disciplinary and criminal action in accordance with the extant laws and regulations, and the Command/Formation leadership will equally be held responsible.”
