THE Falconets of Nigeria began their quest for an African Games gold medal with a 2-0 victory over Morocco in Cape Coast, Ghana tonight.
The Nigeria U-20s scored two first-half goals at the Cape Coast Stadium to take early leadership of Group B in the women’s football event of the Games.
The Falconets got a lucky break with the opening goal, as it was Morocco’s Fatima Bambara who inadvertently put the ball in her own net in the 19th minute.
Yina Adoo then struck five minutes before half-time to double the Falconets’ lead.
The second half produced no more goals as the Falconets comfortably secured victory over the North Africans.
The Falconets will next face Senegal on Monday also in Cape Coast, with one point enough to see the Nigerians through to the semi-finals from the three-team group.
Nigeria won gold in the women’s football event of the last African Games in Morocco in 2019.
