A five-story building collapsed on Garden Street Fegge, Onitsha, Anambra State, this morning. This is happening less than two weeks after a building collapse at the Oduigbo area of the Ochanja market in Onitsha,
The chairman of the Anambra State Physical Planning Board, Chike Mmaduekwe, confirmed the incident, expressing relief that there were no casualties as it was a partial collapse.
He revealed that the approved plan was for a three-story building, but the developer proceeded to construct a five-story building for commercial purposes.
An excavator was dispatched to the site for rubble clearance and potential rescue operations.
Governor Chukwuma Soludo emphasized the importance of obtaining approvals and adhering to construction regulations to prevent tragedies, warning that unauthorized structures would be demolished, including the recently collapsed building where the developer had repeatedly flouted regulations despite notices.
