CATHOLIC Bishops, along with Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma, attended the ordination of the auxiliary Bishop of Orlu Diocese in Imo State.
The Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria urged President Bola Tinubu to utilize his position to seek legal solutions for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), for the benefit of the South-East region.
This plea followed the rejection of Kanu’s bail application by a Federal High Court in Abuja.
The President of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria, Most Reverend Lucius Ugorji, made this appeal during the episcopal ordination.
He emphasized that Kanu’s release could lead to economic growth and improved security in the South East, attributing his continued detention to insecurity in the region and the economic losses incurred due to the weekly sit-at-home protests.
Despite the denial of bail yesterday by Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court in Abuja.
The court ordered an expedited trial for Kanu, who faces charges of treasonable felony.
Kanu’s legal counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, expressed dissatisfaction with the ruling, citing difficulties in communicating with their client and alleging violations of his rights under the Nigerian Constitution.
Ejimakor added that it has been difficult to have a meeting with Kanu in the custody of the DSS, as their conversations were always monitored and Kanu is still wearing the same outfit that the court ordered to be changed.
He alleged unfair treatment of his client, which he said contravened the Nigerian Constitution.
