LIVERPOOL scored late to rescue a point against Manchester United at Old Trafford today but the Reds slipped up in the English Premier League title race.
Jurgen Klopp’s side would have gone back to the top spot with a win against their bitter rivals but they needed a late penalty from Mohamed Salah to earn a 2-2 draw.
Liverpool were totally dominant in a first half in which they had 15 attempts, four on target, to none from Manchester United, and the visitors deservedly went into the break in the lead.
Luis Diaz fired Liverpool into the lead in the 23rd minute, reacting quickest to a Darwin Nunez header from a corner kick.
At half-time, United would have felt fortunate to be only one goal behind but they were a different team after the break.
Erik ten Hag’s side needed a bit of luck to level up in the 60th minute, as Bruno Fernandes pounced on a wayward ball from Jarell Quansah to unleash a long-range effort past the stranded Caoimhin Kelleher in the Liverpool goal.
The equaliser energised the previously lethargic and disjointed hosts, and they were soon in front.
It was a special strike from Kobbie Mainoo that put United in front, the 18-year-old curling a superb shot past Kelleher from the edge of the box in the 66th minute.
Liverpool needed to win the match and they were given a gift when Aaron wan Bissaka brought Harvey Elliott down in the United box.
A penalty was awarded and Mohamed Salah converted past Andre Onana in the 84th minute to score his sixth Premier League goal at Old Trafford, the most of any visiting player in the competition’s history.
Liverpool are second in the table, behind leaders Arsenal on goal difference, with champions Manchester City third one point adrift.
