PDP crisis: Only God gives power, Atiku tells supporters

FORMER Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has stated that only God Almighty has the authority to bestow power.

He stated this in response to the ongoing discord surrounding the outcome of the 98th National Executive Committee meeting of the Peoples Democratic Party in Abuja.

During a WhatsApp group conversation with his supporters, Atiku reiterated the belief that power ultimately comes from God, not from any human being.

The party, in its recent intra-party decisions, endorsed the reconstitution of its Disciplinary and Reconciliation Committees to enhance its stability.

Atiku’s assertion follows concerns raised by some of his followers regarding potential betrayal within the party.

Despite facing setbacks in his presidential bids, Atiku remains steadfast in his faith, stating, “There is God. It is God that gives power, not anybody.”

In response to the calls for the suspension of certain party members over alleged anti-party activities, the Deputy National Chairman (South) clarified that such decisions fall under the purview of internal mechanisms like the reconciliation and disciplinary committees, rather than the NEC.

The reliable source, also revealed that Damagum’s fate was decided during the meeting of the PDP Governors’ Forum, which took place at the Akwa Ibom Governor’s lodge in Asokoro, Abuja.

He said, “The PDP governors played a pivotal role in preserving the day and securing Damagum’s position. During their Forum’s meeting, they recognized that allowing the NEC to determine Damagum’s fate amidst the party’s tension could lead to consequences affecting the party’s future.

“They resolved that even if the North-Central region were to nominate Ayu and Damagum’s replacement, it should not occur during the 98th NEC meeting for the sake of peace.

“Instead, they aimed to appease the discontented factions. Additionally, they recommend the revisit of Rivers State PDP Caretaker committee list to accommodate all interests. They appointed former Deputy National Secretary, Emmanuel Agbo, as the Director General of the party’s Governors Forum to pacify North Central and recommended that Damagum continue in his acting capacity until August 15.”

Another NEC member, Dr. Eddy Olafeso, emphasized that the decision wasn’t aimed at appeasing anyone.

He explained that the choice to extend Damagum’s tenure until August 15 was made because it would be imprudent to discuss succession just 48 hours after Ayu’s resignation.
