ARSENAL defeated Manchester United 1-0 today at Old Trafford to return to the top of the English Premier League table.

Leandro Trossard struck the only goal of the tight encounter in the first half to earn the Gunners their first Premier League victory over United at Old Trafford since November 2020, when fans were not allowed into stadiums because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Manchester United have been struggling with injuries recently and Erik ten Hag was forced to play Casemiro in central defence again, less than a week after the Brazil midfielder’s disastrous performance in the 4-0 defeat at Crystal Palace.

Casemiro played a part in today’s goal too, playing Kai Havertz onside before his centre-back partner Johny Evans put up no resistance as the Arsenal forward centred the ball for Trossard to tap in.

Arsenal were expected to overrun the horribly out-of-form hosts but the Gunners were cautious and decided to keep what they had rather than take risks in going for more goals.

With the result, Arsenal set a new club record of 27 wins in a 38-match league season and now lead Manchester City by one point at the top of the standings.

The Gunners will be hoping that their North London neighbours Totte bynham Hotspur do them a favour by stopping Manchester City from winning their game in hand on Tuesday night.

If City beat Spurs in London, the champions would go back on top and lead by two points going into the final fixtures of the season next Sunday.
