THE Nigerian Idol Season 9 stage has no doubt been a burst of emotions. From a sea of hopefuls, each with a voice and a dream, the judges sifted through the pack, searching for that perfect blend of raw talent and great stage presence through weeks of intense auditions.
After surviving the heart-pounding auditions (Wooden Mic) and gruelling challenges of Theatre Week, which consisted of duet battles and solo performances, these contestants – Chioma, Mira Clear, David Garland, Lady Ruth, Stevie, Maio, Gracia, Jennifer Igomu, Chima, and Lammy have through their talent, perseverance, and sheer determination, earned their respective places in the Top 10 class (contestants) for the season 9, and thus perform during weekly Live Show which commenced on Sunday night, May 26.
The Road to Top 10
To be in the Top 10, Chioma, with a stellar performance delivered Jennifer Hudson’s hit song If This Isn’t Love with her voice carrying the weight of both grief and unwavering love. Next to make it into the 2024 top 10 was Mira Clear who had dreamt of making it to the Nigerian Idol Live Shows.
She delivered a fantastic performance of Bob Marley and the Wailers’ song, No Woman No Cry, to secure her spot. David Garland did not only impress the judges with his pink suit, but his excellent solo performance of Marvin Gaye’s What’s Going On, earned him a stop in the top 10.
The positive streak continued with Lady Ruth and Stevie who left a teaching career in pursuit of success in the music industry. Maio gave a performance that earned him a standing ovation from Ric Hassani.
Beyond getting a cake from the judges as it was their birthday, Gracia, and Jennifer Igomu also got a well-deserved pass to the S9 top 10 class. Each one of them blew the judges away with their vocals and performances to earn them a spot on the Sunday Live Show.
Also making it to the top 10 class was Chima, a platinum ticket winner, who is determined to surpass his disappointments of the previous season. The judges were impressed by his performance of Giveon’s Stuck on You which earned him a spot in the coveted Top 10.
This season delivered a plot twist. While nine of the top 10 spots were revealed ahead of the Sunday Live Show, the final spot was kept open for battle by Japh Kenti and Lammy.
In a bid to land a coveted spot in the S9 Top 10, the aspiring musos belted powerhouse vocals. And given judges’ critiques of their performance, a decision was reached to let Nigeria decide who deserves to move into the Top 10. In the end, Lammy took the day as he was announced as the 10th dreamer (contestant) for the S9 grand prize and title – Nigerian Idol winner.
The Live Show Performances
As the battle gets more fierce and the ‘dreamers’ (contestants) embark on a grueling new phase, one filled with carefully chosen songs, live performances, and the challenge of stepping outside the comfort zones of their vocals, nerves will be tested, and weaknesses exposed as they try to out-sing and out-shine each other, gain the confidence and votes of the audience (Nigerians) will get the final say in who will become the winner of Nigerian Idol Season 9.

Chioma
With a voice carrying the weight of both grief and unwavering love, the vulnerability was the strength for Chioma’s awe-inspiring rendition of Greatest Showman’s sweet and lulling tune, Never Enough on Sunday night Live Show.
In 2021, she faced the heartbreaking loss of her mother, a devastating event that almost plunged her into despair, but she pulled through, remembering her mother’s firm belief in her dreams.
With her mother’s love and her sister’s support, the star in the making has found the strength to chase her passion for music on the biggest stage in Nigeria. She hopes to show not only her talent, but also prove to her mother that “all her investment was worth it!”
Mira Clear
Mira Clear doesn’t just sing, she pours her soul into every note. Every time she gets to share her voice with the world. As a songbird, she paid attention to the technical details of a masterful vocal performance while delivering Sia’s inspirational song, Unstoppable on the night.
As a powerhouse, Mira Clear aspires to leave a legacy built on integrity. She also mentions Progress, winner of Nigerian Idol Season 7, as someone who she looks up to. His strong and smooth vocals, dexterity, unwavering determination, and go-getter attitude are a constant source of motivation to her.
According to her, criticism doesn’t break her, instead it fuels her fire. For her, every critique is a chance to refine her craft and become an even better artiste. She avers that she’s on Nigerian Idol to prove that dreams, hard work, and a whole lot of heart can turn anyone into a star.

David Garland
Not a stranger to the Nigerian Idol stage, David Garland’s triumphant stepping on stage and into the world of commercial pop last Sunday, left the judges and the audience in awe with his awe-inspiring performance of Harry Styles’ Falling.
He’s a determined singer who is taking every bit of his second coming to the Nigerian Idol for another shot at stardom seriously. This time around, he brings a renewed sense of purpose and confidence. Having taken time to grow as an artiste, he feels that this time is “the right time” for him to not only captivate both the judges and the audience but also to take the crown.
Stevie
A songwriter and former teacher; his dedication to music is so strong that it compelled him to resign from his teaching career to pursue the melodies full-time. As a performer, Stevie on Sunday Night Live Show found the sweet spot in melting his mellow voice with the delicate piano on Greatest Showman’s A Million Dreams.
This isn’t his first exhibition in the talent show world. Prior to his triumphant arrival on Nigerian Idol, he had pursued his dream on Project Fame. As one of the S9 Top 10 dreamers, Stevie promises premium content and top-notch entertainment. He is confident that he is the next Nigerian Idol and isn’t afraid to bring his unique personality to the stage.
Gracia
Raised by a single mother and facing periods of loneliness, Gracia found solace and strength in music. Her powerful voice is more than just a talent – it’s a lifeline. Her family’s musical legacy flows through her veins, and according to her mom, her gift knows no bounds.
Singing became her way of overcoming life’s challenges. Poised to share her gift with the world, Nigerian Idol Season 9 is her platform. Tapping into her EDM bag during the Live Show, she serenaded the judges and the audience with a stunning performance of Guetta and Sia’s 2011 banger, Titanium.
Jennifer Igomu
Having battled body shaming, Jennifer is an entrepreneur who has found a sanctuary in music through life’s challenges. Her spirit remains unbroken as she channels her emotions and experiences into music using it as an escape.
Now on the stage of Nigerian Idol, she is ready to share her creativity, strong vocals and raw emotions for the world to see. As an aspiring star she on Sunday night did justice with her powerhouse vocals in an anointed performance of Andra Day’s Rise Up, an anthem for hope.
Lady Ruth
This isn’t her first auditioning; she has dreamt of being on the Nigerian Idol stage for a long time, and now that she’s back, she is set on making her mark. Hence, during the Sunday Night Live Show, she flowed with a beautiful technique as she reached for Beyoncé’s high notes, raspy tones and rich riffs during her performance of Drunk in Love by the multiple Grammy winner.
As a star in the making, the club promoter, chef, and singer aim to bring her vibrant energy and passion to the competition. She wants everyone to ‘look out’ for her as she brings all her heart and soul to the stage.
Maio
Not also his first time on the Nigerian Idol show, Maio made it to the Top 29 on Season 8; however his journey was cut short. That setback did not stop him from returning this season. As he returns to rewrite his Nigerian Idol story with a renewed desire to prove himself, this time, he’s coming for everything!
While the street banger, Ojuelegba contained no high notes, Maio knew that a successful rendition would depend on keeping on key, acing the Wizkid’s warm tones, and delivering a lush summer vibe in a chilled setting for his performance.
As a singer, his musical journey began with a spark of jealousy – he was captivated by another singer’s voice and the attention it commanded. That jealousy transformed into a burning passion to harness his talent.
Chima
Having faced adversity at a young age, Chima stepped up to become a role model to his family. Notwithstanding the challenges, music has always been his solace. As a determined singer with a powerful voice and a story that inspires, he showcased vocal agility during the Sunday Night Live Show as he performed the soulful chart-topper, Lose Control by Teddy Swims.
With Nigerian Idol as his platform, Chima is ready to share his gift with the world. He sees the popular singing competition as more than just a singing contest. For him, the show represents a stepping stone to stardom.
Lammy
An electrical engineer with a song in his heart, Lammy is not just another contestant; he is also on a mission to prove something to himself – that he can achieve his musical dreams.
As the eldest sibling in a family of seven, Lammy is used to taking charge, but on the Nigerian Idol stage, he’s ready to push his boundaries and explore his musical potential. He describes himself as a ‘go-getter’ and a ‘people’s person’. He believes in the excellence of his vocal talent, and he promises to be full of surprises throughout the competition.
Lammy melted the stage on Sunday night with his emotional rendition of the popular song All of Me by John Legend, a hit that has become known widely to be a perfect selection in any wedding playlist. The song has become the quintessential love song for all romance.
