THE Federal Government has urged labor unions to resume talks with the tripartite committee regarding the new minimum wage.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, emphasized the government’s commitment to achieving a peaceful resolution and assured that they are willing to engage in dialogue.

He highlighted recent discussions between the National Assembly leadership and labor representatives, underlining the government’s dedication to reaching an agreement.

Idris stressed that both parties share the goal of securing the best outcome for Nigeria and its citizens.

The minister noted the importance of finding a balanced approach to determining the new minimum wage and expressed concerns about the substantial cost implications of the proposed N494,000 wage increase.

He emphasized that this raise could significantly impact the economy at various levels.

Idris also highlighted government initiatives, such as the National Consumer Credit Scheme and the Nigerian Education Loan Fund, as evidence of efforts to alleviate the financial burdens faced by the people.

Furthermore, Idris emphasized that while an increase in wages is important, the government also aims to reduce the cost of living and ensure that citizens retain more of their earnings.

The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) recently commenced a nationwide industrial action due to failed negotiations with the government over a new minimum wage, citing the inadequacy of the current ₦30,000 minimum wage in light of prevailing economic conditions.
