THE Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has raised concerns regarding reports that its airstrikes on terrorist hideouts, including locations associated with notorious bandit leader Bello Turji, resulted in civilian casualties in Zamfara State.
Reports reveal that an airstrike targeting the Tungar Kara community in the Gidan Goga district of Maradun Local Government Area yesterday evening accidentally struck members of the Zamfara Community Protection Guard (ZCPG) and local residents, resulting in at least 16 deaths.
A lawmaker from the Maradun II Constituency in the Zamfara State House of Assembly, Maharazu Salisu Gado Faru, confirmed the incident, describing the airstrike as unintentional and asserting that it targeted local vigilantes mobilized against the bandits.
In response, NAF spokesperson AVM Akinboyewa issued a statement on Sunday titled “NAF Conducts Decisive Air Strikes in Zamfara, Investigating Vigilante Casualty Reports,” clarifying that their operations are typically carried out with careful consideration for human life.
While confirming that an investigation is underway to verify these claims, Akinboyewa underscored that there is no credible evidence supporting the reports of civilian casualties.
“The Nigerian Air Force’s recent airstrike at Tungar Kara in the Zumi Local Government Area of Zamfara State successfully targeted bandits threatening local villages, eliminating several and aiding in the recovery of some kidnapped victims.
“However, we are deeply concerned by reports of civilian fatalities during the operation. As a responsible and professional entity safeguarding national security, the NAF recognizes the value of every Nigerian life.
“We are conducting a thorough investigation to determine the truth of these reports and will communicate the findings to the public for transparency and reassurance.
“Rest assured, while our mission in the Northwest is to combat banditry and restore peace, the safety and well-being of all Nigerians is our top priority. We will collaborate with relevant authorities to uncover the facts and take necessary actions to prevent, minimize, and reduce harm to civilians and civilian infrastructure during our operations,” the statement concluded.
