LIVERPOOL have been knocked out of this season’s UEFA Champions League following a 4-1 penalty shootout defeat to Paris Saint-Germain at Anfield on Tuesday night.
PSG won 1-0 win on the night, through Ousmane Dembele’s 12th minute strike, to level the round of 16 tie 1-1 on aggregate.
Liverpool had fortuitously edged the first leg 1-0 in Paris last Wednesday, and the two teams had to be separated by penalties at Anfield.
Ligue 1 champions PSG converted all four of their penalties through Vitinha, Goncalo Ramos, Ousmane Dembele and Desire Doue, while their goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma saved from Darwin Nunez and Curtis Jones.
Liverpool’s attention will now be on the English Premier League, where they are 15 points clear at the top of the table, and Sunday’s Carabao Cup final against Newcastle United.
In Germany also on Tuesday night, Harry Kane and Alphonso Davies struck to earn Bayern Munich a 2-0 win at Bayer Leverkusen.
The Bavarians advanced to the quarter-finals 5-0 on aggregate having beaten their Bundesliga rivals 3-0 in the first leg in Munich last week.
Super Eagles striker Victor Boniface came off the bench for Leverkusen in the 65th minute, while his international teammate Nathan Tella was an unused substitute for the club.
In other results, Inter Milan defeated Feyenoord 2-1 at San Siro to advance 4-1 on aggregate while Barcelona beat Benfica 3-1 to cruise 4-1 on aggregate.
