Igbobi College, Government College set to kick off National Principals Cup

THE ceremonial kick-off of the National Principals Cup will take place on Friday with a match  between Igbobi College, Lagos and Government College, Kaduna at the Agege Stadium, Lagos, the sports ministry has confirmed.

The Minister of Youth and Sports Development Sunday Dare is expected to take the ceremonial  kick-off, while Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps Brigadier General Ibrahim Shuaibu and Chairman of Remo Stars Football Club Kunle Soname are expected to grace the event.

According to the Director of Grassroots Sports in the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, Dr Ademola Are, the revival of the Principals Cup is one of the cardinal programmes of Dare aimed at reviving schools sports development and grooming young talents in the country.

The Principals Cup used to be restricted to only football but the event will now include several other sports to widen the access to talented schoolchildren in other sports.

Apart from football, table tennis, badminton and athletics events will be held in all the 36 States and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

The state finals are scheduled for between 8 March and 12 March, zonal finals for 18 March to 22 March, while the finals take place from 1 April to 5 April.

The competition is open to Nigerian secondary schools.
