Banks end row with MTN, reconnect customers on USSD

SOME commercial banks have reconnected MTN customers to banking channels, including the Unstructured Supplementary Service Data and banking apps.

They made the move yesterday after the initial row with the Mobile Network Operator which lasted for 48 hours.

While the row lasted it was impossible for any MTN subscriber to recharge or carry out any other online business with the country’s most popular network even amid Easter celebrations. I

It was gathered that the crisis was resolved following the intervention of the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Pantami; and the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, Blueprint reports..

While the row persisted, MTN had snubbed the banks and opted for fintech companies such as Flutterwave, Jumia Pay, OPay, Kuda, Carbon and BillsnPay for customers to recharge their phones.

MTN, with about 77 million subscribers, making up about 45 per cent of the total telecommunication market share in Nigeria, is the largest telecommunication operator in the country.
