EBONYI: One killed as police foil fresh attack on Ugbodo station

BUT for the alertness of the officers on duty another havoc would have been visited on a police station in the state two days ago by hoodlums.

The police officers were said to have repelled the attack and killed one of the assailants in the ensuing duel.

It was gathered that one of the policemen, who repelled the attack, was injured and rushed to an undisclosed hospital for treatment.

The incident happened at the Ugbodo Police Station in the Ebonyi Local Government Area of the state.

A top security source in the state said the gunmen launched the attack around 12am, adding, “but they met stiff resistance from the policemen at the station.

“In the ensuing battle, a police officer sustained an injury, while the gunmen later retreated with some of them being hit by bullets from the policemen.

“In the morning, the police went in search of the bush in the area and discovered the corpse of one of the gunmen.”

It was learnt that a gallon of petrol was also found near the deceased, which was suspected that they had planned to set the station ablaze.

The corpse of the deceased was evacuated to the mortuary, while the injured police officer was rushed to hospital, where he was said to treatment.

Hoodlums, targeting public facilities, particularly police stations, have been on the rampage in the Southeast region of the country recently.

During the weekend, some of these hoodlums attacked the Imo State Police Headquarters and Owerri Corrrectional Centre.

While over 1800 inmates were set free at the correctional centre, buildings and cars parked at the police headquarters were razed.

The hoodlums were back in action two days ago when they set another police station ablaze forcing officers on duty to take to their heels.

The attack happened hours after the outgone Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and other political office holders visited Owerri to assess the magnitude of damage caused by the hoodlums.

The foiled attack in Ebonyi might have been planned to happen simultaneously with the one in Imo.
