Man United legend Giggs charged with assaulting women, sacked as Wales manager

FORMER Manchester United star Ryan Giggs will not take charge of Wales at this summer’s European Championship after being charged with allegedly assaulting his ex-girlfriend and coercive control.

In a statement issued by the Football Association of Wales, it was confirmed that Giggs will not be in charge and the team will instead by led by Rob Page, who has overseen the previous six matches.

The FAW’s board will also convene to discuss “these developments and its impact on the Association and the national team”.

It comes after Giggs, who was forced to stand aside from his Wales duties in November in the wake of the allegations, was charged with three offences by Greater Manchester Police on Friday: two alleged assaults against two women and coercive control.

The full statement on Friday said: “The Football Association of Wales has noted the decision of the Crown Prosecution Service to proceed with charging Ryan Giggs, the men’s national team manager.

“In light of this decision, the FAW can confirm that Robert Page will assume the role of Cymru men’s national team manager for this summer’s Euro 2020 tournament and will be assisted by Albert Stuivenberg.

“An FAW Board meeting will be convened to discuss these developments and its impact on the Association and the national team.

“The FAW will not be making any further comment at this current time.”

Police were called to a disturbance at the Wales manager’s home in the Worsley area of Greater Manchester in November 2020.

A Greater Manchester Police statement issued on Friday said: “Ryan Giggs has been charged with causing actual bodily harm to a woman in her 30s and common assault of a woman in her 20s.

Both counts relate to an incident on the evening of Sunday, November 1, 2020.

“Giggs has also been charged with one count of coercive and controlling behaviour between December 2017 and November 2020.”

He has been bailed and is due to appear at Manchester and Salford Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, April 28.

Wales head into Euros action in seven weeks against Switzerland in Baku, with further Group A clashes against Turkey and Italy to follow.

Giggs was one of United’s famous ‘class of 92’ along with David Beckham, Paul Scholes and Gary Neville, the group of players who came up together from the academy to win multiple Premier League titles as well as the Champions League for the club under Sir Alex Ferguson.
