A GROUNDSWELL of opposition has arisen against Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, which may ultimately lead to his impeachment, according to a member of the House of Representatives, Sergius Ogun.

Ogun spoke today while fielding questions on Arise Television.

The lawmaker representng Esan North-East/ South-East attributed the development to what he termed loose remarks by the Senate President on the position held by Southern governors on the matter of the country’s restructuring and open grazing of cattle by herders.

Ogun, a second timer in the upper chamber, claimed that Lawan’s comments had betrayed his plans to scuttle the ongoing constitution amendment project which has the key element of restructuring of the Nigerian state.

“Because of ethnic factors, we can’t gather enough signatures to impeach Buhari as the north won’t support it.

“In the eighth Assembly, I signed an impeachment notice but my colleagues from the North, who even admitted that Buhari had failed, said they can never support the emergence of a Yoruba man”.

“As for the Senate President, he must be impeached this week because of his comments on restructuring.

“He is the chairman of the National Assembly, how can he be talking as if he is not aware of his position.

“The Senate President must be impeached this week and I think the process has started.”

Recall that Lawan had accused the governors of retreating to regionalism to address a national issue that should be collectively decided upon.

He said: “I believe that, as leaders, especially those of us who are elected, we should not be at the forefront of calling for this kind of thing because, even if you are a governor, you are supposed to be working hard in your state to ensure that this restructuring you are calling for at the federal level, you have done it in your state as well.

“What you may accuse the Federal Government of, whatever it is, you may also be accused of the same thing in your state. So, we are supposed to ensure that we have complete and total way of ensuring that our systems at the federal, state and even local government levels work for the people.

“We should avoid regionalism. We are all leaders and we are in this together. The solutions to our challenges must come from us regardless of what level of government we are, whether at the federal, state or the local government level. I believe that Nigeria is going to come out of these challenges stronger”.
