Disputed Sierra Leone vs Benin AFCON qualifier postponed again

THE Africa Cup of Nations qualifier between Sierra Leone and Benin has been postponed by another day after yet more controversy.

The match had to be cancelled in March and rescheduled for June following controversy over the validity of Covid-19 results.

It was originally scheduled for Freetown, Sierra Leone with the winner filling the 24th spot left in the AFCON billed for Cameroon in 2022.
After Benin Republic refused to accept that several of their players were positive for Covid-19 in March and Sierra Leone took their case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, the final resolution was that the match be played on Monday in Conakry, Guinea.

But another row erupted on Monday over the authenticity of Covid-19 results which found six Sierra Leone players positive just before kick-off.

Tests on Sunday had cleared all the players of both teams and Sierra Leone disputed Monday’s tests.

The tests on Sunday were conducted by CAF
officials, but there was no explanation for the change from negative to positive status of the six.

Sierra Leone refused to accept the new results and more than two hours after the scheduled kick-off time, CAF decided to delay the fixture by one day.

A win will see Sierra Leone through to their first AFCON in 25 years while Benin Republic need a draw.

Nigeria comfortably won the qualifying group the both teams featured in, the Super Eagles garnering 14 points from six games.
