THE Confederation of African Football has given its support to the proposal to organise the senior men’s FIFA World Cup every two years.
The tournament is currently held every four years, but FIFA President Gianni Infantino has been pushing for it to be held every two years like most competitions organised by the world governing body.
“The Executive Committee gave its support to the project of a men’s and women’s World Cup every two years, which was formulated during the last FIFA Congress. The committee asked that FIFA be informed of this favourable reception,” CAF stated on Monday.
The Executive Committee of the African body met in Rabat, Morocco on Friday where this resolution and other decisions were made.
The committee also ratified the calendar for the 2021/2022 Champions League and Confederation Cup.
The draw for the preliminary rounds of the club competitions will be done on or before 15 August, with the kick-off set for 10 September.
With five matchdays to go in the Nigeria Professional Football League, the country’s representatives should emerge just in time for the draw.
Bids to host the continental club competition finals will be opened in November, according to CAF.
The Executive Committee also “instructed the Interclub Competitions Committee to accelerate the feasibility study of the African Supranational League project”, referring to the controversial African Super League, whose European version was shut down after it’s announcement sparked protests.
The Executive Committee said it was satisfied with the progress made by Cameroon as the country gets set to host the Africa Cup of Nations in January 2022.
However, the body will make a final inspection visit in mid-August to assess the progress of the Olembe stadium and the possibility of organising the next home match of the Cameroon national team in the September 2021 window.
The Executive Committee gave its support to the General Secretary to quickly implement the PwC recommendations and to explore the legal consequence of the findings of the report.
The body believes the “implementation of these recommendations will make CAF more attractive to its current and potential partners and sponsors, as its President Patrice Motsepe recalled in his 10-point programme”.
