THE protests in Nigeria against the incessant brutal acts of the police, especially the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) unit, have gained the support of a key member of the Super Eagles squad, Naija Times reports.
The national team are in Austria to play two friendly matches, one of them on Friday night against Algeria, but they are aware of what is going on back home in Nigeria.
Nigerian youths, fed up of the extra-judicial killings, harrassment and extortion perpetrated by men of SARS and the police in general, have taken to the streets in several cities calling for the scrapping of SARS and an end to police brutality.
The captain of the Super Eagles Ahmed Musa lent his voice to the protests on Friday and also condemned the situation in the Northern parts of the country where bandits incessantly raid towns and villages to steal, destroy and kill.
“In a world where genuine love for ourselves seems to be so scarce, I sincerely pray that the right thing is done to put an end to the strife. #EndNorthBanditry #EndPoliceBrutality,” Musa tweeted on Friday and added two crying emojis to convey his pain.
Youths have camped out at state government secretariats, police stations and other strategic locations since the protests began this week, demanding reassurance and immediate reforms. The #EndSARS hashtag has been one of the top trends on social media for at least two days as thousands of people contribute to the protests online.
