Antonio Rudiger, Joao Cancelo, Allain Saint-Maximin and Ismaila Sarr are also up for the award.
Manchester United forward Ronaldo scored three goals in three Premier League games during the month as his side won two matches and lost one.
On his part, Egyptian star Salah also scored three goals in three league fixtures in September for Liverpool, who won two of their games and drew the other one.
Chelsea centre-back Rudiger was instrumental in his side’s two clean sheets in September, while he also scored one goal.
Full-back Cancelo helped Manchester City keep three clean sheets and provided the assist for Gabriel Jesus as they defeated Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
Although Newcastle United failed to win any league fixtures in September, forward Saint-Maximin contributed one goal and two assists as they recorded two draws and one defeat.
Senegal forward Sarr scored three goals for Watford in September during a spell in which they won one, drew one and lost one match.
To determine the winner of the award, fans’ votes will be combined with those of a panel of football experts.
The winner is expected to be announced next week.
