FRANCE came from behind on Sunday night in Milan, Italy to beat Spain 2-1 and claim the 2021 UEFA Nations League title.
Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema and Paris Saint-Germain forward Kylian Mbappe scored the goals for France while Mikel Oyarzabal netted for Spain.
Mbappe’s contentious winner made a big difference as 2018 World Cup winners France became the second team to win the Nations League.
Mbappe was adjudged to be onside in the 80th minute when he slipped the ball under Spain goalkeeper Unai Simon for the winning goal.
Eric Garcia had a touch before the ball reached the Frenchman, therefore making him offside.
If Garcia had not touched the ball, Mbappe would have been offside and the goal would have been chalked off.
After a drab first half, Spain had taken the lead in the 64th minute through Oyarzabal, who shook off defender Dayot Upamecano to beat goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.
France responded immediately, equalising straight from the kick-off with Benzema’s spectacular strike.
Spain’s Sergio Busquets was named player of the tournament after captaining his side to the final.
Portugal won the first Nations League title in 2019.
