VICTOR Osimhen has passed himself fit to feature for Nigeria at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.
The Napoli striker was a major doubt for the competition after breaking his cheekbones in a collision during a Serie A match in November.
After undergoing surgery, the doctors said Osimhen would need up to 90 days to make a full recovery, ruling him out until late February 2022.
The AFCON in Cameroon is scheduled for 9 January to 6 February.
However, the 22-year-old’s recovery has been quicker than anticipated and he could return to action in the next few days after returning to training with Napoli last week.
Osimhen himself has now spoken out about his recovery, declaring that he is ready to represent his country in Cameroon.
“I will be available for AFCON 100 percent unless if am not among the players picked to represent NIGERIA,” he wrote on Twitter on Tuesday.
The lanky frontman is one of the Super Eagles’ most important players, scoring in each of the team’s last five matches as they reached the African playoffs for the Qatar 2022 World Cup.
Osimhen’s availability will be a huge boost for Super Eagles interim head coach Austin Eguavoen, especially with Genk striker Paul Onuachu ruled out with a hamstring injury.
Eguavoen, who won the Africa Cup of Nations as Super Eagles vice-captain in 1994, replaced Gernot Rohr last week after the German was sacked.
The former defender was also the Super Eagles head coach to the 2006 AFCON in Egypt, where the team won bronze.
