Soyinka’s classic, ‘Death and the King’s Horseman’ on stage at Terra Kulture, Lagos

FROM Thursday May 13 through Sunday 16, Wole Soyinka’s classic, Death and the King’s Horseman will be on stage at the Terra Arena, Terra Kulture, Victoria Island, Lagos.

The latest project of BAP Productions, the famous play, according to the production note, is based on actual events which occurred during the British occupation of Nigeria.

According to the Producer, Joseph Umoibom, “The play focuses around the duty of Elesin, the King’s Horseman, to commit suicide in the wake of the King’s death or the month before. British Colonial District Officer Simon Pilkings takes on the duty to stop him. Cheered and egged on by his friends and fellow Yoruba tribesmen and women, Elesin knows it is his duty to die, so that he can guide the King in the afterlife. Pilkings and the British consider the act barbaric and illegal as they consider all life sacred, so they aim to stop him.” 

The production features an impressive cast including Olarotimi Fakunle, Lanre Adediwura, Fares Boulos aka ‘Oyibo Rebel’, Moshood Fattah, Nansy MrsHustle, Ronya Man.

Said Umoibom, “In this BAP Production, Bolanle Austen-Peters brings to life this legendary drama which highlights the conflict between duty and conviction, law and tradition, logic and religion.”
