Ghana captain Andre Ayew has admitted that his penalty miss against Uruguay in their final Group H clash at the Qatar 2022 World Cup on Friday is difficult for him to process.

The Al Sadd forward’s penalty in the 21st minute was saved by Uruguay goalkeeper Sergio Rochet and Ghana went on to concede two goals in the damaging 2-0 defeat, the first one five minutes after the miss.

Ghana would have qualified for the round of 16 with a draw, but they were eliminated along with Uruguay as Portugal and South Korea advanced from the group.

“We had the opportunity to get to the next stage but I missed the penalty. It’s difficult to take,’’ Ayew, the son of the legendary Abedi Pele, told reporters.

‘’We did not get it right but I am very optimistic for the future. I am sad but we will try and make it better.”

Meanwhile, Mohammed Kudus, Ghana’s outstanding player at the tournament who won the penalty Ayew missed, has assured fans that the Black Stars will get better.

‘’I want to thank Ghanaians; I know they are very disappointed right now but I really want to thank them for their support from the start of the tournament, even some of them flew all the way from Ghana to Qatar to support us,” the Ajax forward said.

‘’It has been incredible, and we want to thank them for their prayers and their support, we will keep improving as human beings and we will do better next time.”
