THE police have detained Alhassan Ado Doguwa, the Majority Leader of the House of Representatives, for his suspected role in the killing of some people and the burning of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) secretariat during the just concluded election.
The police reported that at least three persons were killed when the NNPP campaign secretariat in Tudunwada was set ablaze.
During the crisis that erupted at the compilation of the results of the Doguwa/Tudunwada House of Representatives election, which Doguwa was later adjudged to have won, two people were burned to death.
According to a reputable source in the police force, Doguwa was apprehended at the Malam Aminu Kano International Airport as he was ready to board an aircraft to Abuja.
According to the source, a report from the police command in Tudunwada revealed that Doguwa personally led the thugs who set fire to the NNPP secretariat, killing at least two persons.
“He also used the pistol of his orderly and fired and several persons. So we have arrested him in connection to murder and arson.”
“He is currently cooling off in the state Criminal Investigation Department,” the source, who is very familiar with the investigation and asked not to be named, said.
SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, spokesman for the Kano Police Command, did not react to a call to his phone number.
Earlier, Doguwa denied any wrongdoing during a press conference with media, saying he learned the police were looking for him but had not received any formal invitation.
He also denied shooting at any persons during the elections, claiming that he does not own a pistol and does not know how to use one.
“I never held a gun. I don’t even know how to hold a gun. I also never held any weapon throughout the election,” he said.
He, however, said the crisis started when NNPP supporters came with the mindset of burning the INEC office and were repelled by supporters of APC.
