THE Flying Eagles got off to a winning start at the FIFA U-20 World Cup with a 2-1 victory over Dominican Republic tonight in Mendoza, Argentina.

The Nigerian side had to come from behind to secure the win against the debutants in the Group D opener.

Dominican Republic took the lead from the penalty spot early in the first half but an own goal before half-time and a Samson Lawal strike after the break handed Nigeria the three points.

Edison Azcona converted from the spot in the 23rd minute to give the underdog Dominicans a shock lead, stunning the Flying Eagles.

Ladan Bosso’s team responded to the setback by creating several chances in search of the leveller, with Jude Sunday the most vibrant player in the side with his dribbling and long-range shooting.

The equaliser the Flying Eagles deserved for their relentless attacking endeavours came in fortunate circumstances in the 31st minute as Guillermo Rosario headed a corner into his own net past the stranded Dominican Republic goalkeeper.

Nigeria had several opportunities to get their noses in front in the first half but they were undone by poor finishing.

The Flying Eagles got the winning goal in the 71st minute through Lawal and were on the front foot for the rest of the match, with the Argentine crowd cheering their every move.

Next up for Nigeria are Italy in Mendoza on Wednesday night.
