THE Nigerian Senate has called on the military to immediately redeploy troops and advanced military equipment to Borno and Yobe states, following renewed Boko Haram attacks in the North-East.

This resolution was prompted by recent incidents, including the killing of over a dozen soldiers in Marte town (Monguno LGA) on May 12, and another attack in Gajiram (Nganzai LGA) the following day.

Senate Chief Whip, Tahir Munguno, who moved the motion, highlighted the past success of joint military and civilian efforts in reclaiming Borno from terrorist control.

However, he expressed concern over Boko Haram’s evolving tactics, such as the use of drones and improvised explosive devices (IEDs), which have resulted in significant military and civilian casualties.

The Senate urged the military high command to send more personnel to the region and ensure they are properly equipped with modern technology.

It also mandated its committees on the army and air force to monitor the execution of the directive.

Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Zulum, strongly condemned the recent wave of terrorist attacks across the state, including those on the Maiduguri-Damboa Road, Marte, Chibok, Gwoza, and Kala Balge.

He extended condolences to the families of victims, including two education workers killed by an IED explosion while en route to sit for the TRCN exam.

In a statement by his spokesman, Dauda Iliya, Governor Zulum reaffirmed the state’s commitment to collaborating with the Federal Government and security agencies to restore peace.

He also visited Gwoza recently, engaging with troops and community members to reinforce local resilience.

“These acts of terror are deeply tragic,” Zulum stated. “We remain resolute in supporting our military and will not relent until the insurgency is defeated. I urge our people to stay strong and hopeful—we will overcome, Insha Allah.”
