THE Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has announced its 2022 nominees, revealing the 17 acts eligible for induction into the Rock Hall’s Class of 2022.

Afrobeat pioneer, Fela Aníkúlápó Kuti, was one of this year’s nominees. The nomination will be the second time the late Abami Eda (weired one) will be nominated, having missed out on being inducted after being nominated last year.

Other nominees include Indie auteur Beck, rock hitmaker Pat Benatar, art rocker Kate Bush, new wave oddballs Devo, new wave chart-toppers Duran Duran, hip-hop heavyweight Eminem, synth-pop duo Eurythmics, heavy metal fixtures Judas Priest, political rock outfit MC5, proto-punks New York Dolls, country legend Dolly Parton, rap-metal outfit Rage Against the Machine, R&B hitmaker Lionel Richie, pop singer-songwriter Carly Simon, alt hip-hop icons, A Tribe Called Quest and pop vocal pro-Dionne Warwick.

Though it is first nomination for Beck, Eminem, Duran Duran, Lionel Richie, A Tribe Called Quest, several of the names have certainly been eligible for decades; the Rock Hall’s rule is that artiste must have released their first commercial recording 25 years earlier than the year of the nomination.

Given the prerequiste above, it means Eminem scored a nomination in his first year of eligibility, much like RRHOF 2021 inductee Jay-Z.

This year’s nomination is the sixth for Detroit rockers MC5 and the fourth nomination for Rage Against the Machine, perhaps the most successful rock band to follow MC5 in espousing revolutionary political action.

This is the sixth nomination for Detroit rockers MC5 and the fourth nom for Rage Against the Machine, perhaps the most successful rock band to follow MC5 in espousing revolutionary political action.

While the year 2022 marks the third nomination for Kate Bush, Judas Priest, New York Dolls and Devo, it is the second nomination for Dionne Warwick, Eurythmics and the late Fela Kuti after appearing on the ballot last year for the first time. It is also Pat Benatar’s second nomination, after first appearing on the ballot in 2020.

It worthy to note that the Rock Hall inductees are decided upon by a body of more than 1,000 artistes, industry members, and historians, while fans have the opportunity to contribute to the selection process by voting every day at vote.rockhall.com or the museum in Cleveland.

The five artistes who receive the most votes of these 17 nominees will be tallied among the other ballots to ultimately decide the Class of 2022.

The Rock and Roll Class of 2022 will be revealed in May 2022, with the ceremony itself taking place at a yet to-be-announced date and location.

Established in 1983 and located in Cleveland, Ohio, United States, thr Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is dedicated to recording the history of some of the best-known and most influential musicians, bands, producers, and others that have in some major way influenced the music industry, particularly in the area of rock and roll.

Originally, there were four categories of induction: performers, non-performers, early influences, and lifetime achievement. In 2000, “sidemen” was introduced as a category.

The only category that has seen new inductees every single year is the performers category. Artistes become eligible for induction in that category 25 years after the release of their first record.

In order to be inducted, an artist must be nominated by a committee that selects a number of candidates, the highest being 16 for the 2020 class. Ballots are then sent to more than 1,000 “rock experts” who evaluate the candidates and vote on who should be inducted.

The performers that receive the highest number of votes are inducted. This number varies; for example, seven were inducted in 2019. Starting in 2012, fans could vote on a fan ballot with an equal weight to the other ballots.

As of 2017, new inductees are honored at an annual ceremony held alternately in New York and at the Hall of Fame in Cleveland; prior to that, the ceremonies rotated between Cleveland, New York, and Los Angeles. As of May 2021, there were 351 inductees.
