GUNMEN yesterday attacked the palace of the Olukoro of Koro in Ekiti Local Government Area of Kwara State, killing Oba Peter Segun Aremu and kidnapping his wife and two others.

The traditional monarch, a retired army general, was reportedly shot dead in his palace yesterday night, while his wife and two other people were taken away.

The state government through Governor Abdulrahman AbdulRazaq’s Chief Press Secretary (CPS), Rafiu Ajakaye, has confirmed the incidence, describing it as reckless, frightening, and awful.

The Kwara governor, who also serves as chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), condemned the monarch’s assassination and the kidnapping of his wife and two other people.

He also directed security authorities to employ all available means to locate the culprits, free the spouse and those kidnapped, and bring them to justice.

“We will certainly get the perpetrators and ensure that this is their last crime against humanity,” the Governor said, adding: “My profound condolences go to the people of Koro. Our hearts are broken, and we stand by them at this time and always.”

Following the incident, police authorities in the state have vowed to clamp down on the perpetrators and rescue the victims.

“The Kwara State Police Command, under the leadership of The Commissioner of Police CP Victor OLAIYA (psc+), expresses his heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and the entire community affected by this heinous act. Our prayers are with them during this challenging time,” the spokesperson of the Kwara Police Command Ejire-Adeyemi Toun said.

“Immediate and intensive investigations are underway to apprehend those criminals for this reprehensible act. We assure the public that no stone will be left unturned in ensuring that the perpetrators are brought to justice swiftly.”

Koro is a town in Kwara that borders Irele/Oke Ako/Ipao/Oke Aiyedun and Ikole in Ekiti State. These Kwara/Ekiti brothers have agricultural borders.

They are the communities where three traditional rulers were attacked and two were killed a few days ago. It had recently become a hotbed for murder and kidnapping.
