The state Environmental and Special Offence Unit, also known as Taskforce in Lagos State, is willing to work with the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) to educate willing commercial bus drivers to reduce disobedience to traffic rules and regulations.
Furthermore, the unit reaffirmed its commitment to keeping its operatives in check.
In an Agege meeting on Friday, NURTW’s chairman, CSP Shola Jejeloye, informed state executives and branch heads of the unit’s formation.
The meeting was called to resolve the conflict between commercial bus drivers and the agency’s operatives.
He said: “If indeed we are to eliminate friction between commercial bus drivers in Lagos State and the Enforcement Team of Lagos Taskforce, we must be ready to educate willing union members on what constitutes obstruction, driving against traffic, and driving on BRT Lane.
If this involves engaging other relevant government agencies, it won’t be a wasted effort if we desire sanity on Lagos roads.”
The head of the Lagos State Taskforce stated that the agency had created a team to monitor both its operatives and those exploiting motorists and road users under the name of the Lagos State Taskforce.
In his address, he urged the Union organisations to encourage their members to work with the Taskforce, assuring them that what they were doing was for the state and its residents benefit.
Alhaji Musiliu Akinsanya, Chairman of NURTW, urged drivers not to pick up commuters at places not designated as bus stops. He also advised them to avoid obstructions, driving on the BRT lane, and driving against traffic (one-way).
Akinsanya asked the branch leaders to implement mechanisms so that union members become informed and obey traffic regulations.
