CRISTIANO Ronaldo was the star of the show on Saturday evening as Manchester United shrugged off last week’s humiliating defeat to Liverpool.
The Portugal superstar scored one of the goals and set up another to help United to a 3-0 Premier League win at Tottenham Hotspur.
With both sides needing a win to change the course of their season, it was United who came out fighting as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer changed the side’s shape to three at the back.
Ronaldo handed the initiative to United in the 39th minute with a brilliant volley from inside the Tottenham box after a superb long pass from Bruno Fernandes.
The 36-year-old then turned provider, setting up Edinson Cavani with an inch-perfect through ball in the 64th minute.
Ronaldo was taken off after 70 minutes and replaced by Marcus Rashford who netted the third goal in the 86th minute to give United their first league win in five marches.
The win lifted Solskjaer’s side to fifth place in the table with 17 points, while Spurs slipped to 10th with 15 points.
In Italy, Juventus dropped to ninth spot in Serie A after Verona condemned Massimiliano Allegri’s side to a fourth league defeat of the season.
Giovanni Simeone scored twice in three minutes to give hosts Verona a 2-0 lead.
Weston McKennie reduced the deficit with 10 minutes remaining, but there was no late fighback for the visitors.
The result moved Verona above Juventus, who trail joint leaders Napoli and AC Milan by 13 points.
