‘This face-me-i-face-you house comedy highlights the stereotypes, prejudices and biases based on skin colour while pointing out demeaning/condescending expressions used especially on women, believing their skin colour or body feature equates to their brain capacity. It is funny, captivating, dramatic and intense’
SUNDAY July 10 and Monday July 11, Cream Body, a play that touches on discussions around “skin colours, bleaching, toning, pigmentation, colourism and identity”, will be on stage at the Agip Hall, MUSON Centre, Onikan Lagos. It will run at 1pm, 3pm, 6pm daily.
Courtesy Kininso Koncepts, which has been known for its agit-prop mode of theatrical presentations, Cream Body, in the words of the director of the play, who also devised the idea, is a “face-me-i-face-you house comedy highlights the stereotypes, prejudices and biases based on skin colour while pointing out demeaning/condescending expressions used especially on women, believing their skin colour or body feature equates to their brain capacity. It is funny, captivating, dramatic and intense.”
One out of the three performances created by Kininso after its research laboratory in 2020, the play, he added, “was made for the Black African adult audience, SKIN was made for teenagers and adults premiered at the World Theatre Festival (Theater Der Welt) in 2021 in Dusseldorf, Germany and KOLOFU for ages 2-7 had its showcase in Nigeria, Brazil and in Berlin, Germany this year. We look forward to a potential run across Nigeria, the UK and other parts of Africa and invite you to join us as we address this topic that may change the cause of Africa forever.”
Giving further explanation on the idea of the play, Alabi stated, “This started as an international exchange program as part of the Fratz International festival Berlin, Germany where we conducted a research on the subject of ‘Skin Tone’ with the question – ‘colours, cant it just be beautiful? An interesting research that dug into bleaching, identity, racism and colour issues around the world especially focusing on the psychological, physical and health damage bleaching causes and the high data of the skin bleaching market and general effect of skin lightening on personalities and cultures around Africa, Asia and the global south.”
